Joint Effort to Save Vanishing Species

Addax Calves Born at Brookfield Zoo

Not one, not two, but three female addax calves have been born at Brookfield Zoo within the last two months, and one more is expected by the end of the summer. The most recent was born this past Saturday, July 9. The other two were born on May 30 and June 1. All are doing well and can be seen with their mothers—Martha, Sara, and Mali—on exhibit in their outdoor habitat on the north side of the zoo.  more...

Champion for Polar Bears Award

Polar Bears International (PBI) presented its prestigious “Champion for Polar Bears” award to the Chicago Zoological Society (CZS) on Saturday, May 7, recognizing the Society for its acclaimed climate awareness programs and polar bear initiatives at Brookfield Zoo. National Climate Literacy Plan

CZS is leading a collaboration of zoological, education, science, and research specialists in developing plans for a national Climate Literacy Zoo Education Network (CliZEN). The initiative, which is the first of its kind for zoos, will explore new approaches to science education by connecting zoo and aquarium visitors to polar animals—including polar bears—whose lives are threatened by climate change.  more...

Science Fair Held for Chicago Schools

Running with the Pack

By early spring, Habitat Africa: The Savannah should be literally filled with puppy love. 10 African wild dog puppies, born on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 2010, are currently off exhibit with their mother Kim, 6, father Digger, 4, and Digger’s brother Duke, 4. Seeking new ways to help people understand the impact of climate change, the National Science Foundation program on Climate Change Education has awarded a $1 million grant to the Chicago Zoological Society (CZS). GLTs in the Trees at Brookfield Zoo

Now through mid-September, a pair of golden lion tamarins named Diabo and Delilah has been released in the wooded area just east of Indian Lake. The release provides the monkeys with the opportunity to learn how to catch insects and climb in the trees in an outdoor environment.  more...
