Brookfield Zoo’s FREEze Day Offers Both Outdoor and Indoor Events

Brookfield, Ill.—Enjoy the outdoors, and the indoors, this winter during Brookfield Zoo’s FREEze Day on Sunday, February 20. The day’s events feature fun for the entire family—plus admission to the zoo is free.

Bundle up and join the Green Valley Dog Drivers (GVDD) and their four-legged friends as they demonstrate dog-sledding from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the zoo’s West Mall. Members of the Lemont-based dog-sledding organization will engage guests in games and musher talks with their canine teams.

Additional outdoor entertainment will include appearances by Raven, a Native American flutist, and Quentin Young, a Lakota storyteller who will talk about the bison and other winter-hardy animals that reside at the zoo’s Great Bear Wilderness exhibit. Also joining in the festivities will be representatives from Free Spirit Siberian Rescue, a non-profit organization working to reduce the number of homeless Siberian huskies in Illinois. The organization’s members will be available to discuss the benefits of adopting dogs with zoo guests.

Later in the day, guests can warm up in the zoo’s Discovery Center and enjoy the talented musicians of Chicago Sinfonietta during a live performance at 3:00 p.m. The matinee concert, "Fragrances of Land, Sea and Air," will feature an array of classical music favorites with selections by Holst, Handel, and Saint Saens conducted by Renee Baker. The cost for the concert is $20 for adults and $15 for children 3 to 12. For more information or to order tickets by phone, call (312) 236-3681 or visit www.chicagosinfonietta.org.

Admission to Brookfield Zoo is free every Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday in January and February, including on February 20. In addition, admission to Children’s Zoo and Hamill Family Play Zoo is free through February 28. Parking is $9. For more information, visit www.CZS.org or call (708) 688-8000.

The Chicago Zoological Society, which manages Brookfield Zoo, inspires conservation leadership by connecting people with wildlife and nature. Open every day of the year, Brookfield Zoo is located off First Avenue between the Stevenson (I-55) and Eisenhower (I-290) expressways and is also accessible via the Tri-State Tollway (I-294), Metra commuter line, CTA, and PACE bus service.
