The Chicago Zoological Society (CZS) received Top Honors for the 2013 Angela Peterson Excellence in Diversity Award from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) at its national conference, which was held in Kansas City, Missouri, last week. The Top Honors were awarded to the Society for its significant efforts and results in cultivating conservation communities with its suppliers, workforce, and guest diversity initiatives.

The Chicago Zoological Society is proud to announce that Randall Wells, Ph.D., senior conservation scientist for the Society and director of the Sarasota Dolphin Research Program, based in Florida’s Mote Marine Laboratory, has been nominated for the biennial Indianapolis Prize, the world’s leading award for conservation. The Indianapolis Prize is given every other year to an individual who has made extraordinary contributions to conservation efforts for animal species.

Brookfield Zoo is proud to announce the birth of a male snow leopard cub on June 13. The 10-pound cub is the first cub born to 3-year-old Sarani and her mate Sabu. Currently residing in an off-exhibit den with his mom, he will remain there before making his public debut in mid-September. A leading snow leopard conservation organization, The Snow Leopard Trust, estimates population numbers of this elusive cat to be between 3,500 and 7,000 remaining in the wild.

Everyone is welcome to gallop, scurry, and trot alongside the animals at Brookfield Zoo’s Zoo Run Run for the Conservation Fund, a fundraiser that supports threatened species and their environments. The 5K race promises to be a wildly fun time on Sunday, September 22, and registered participants may bring family and friends to cheer them on and enjoy the zoo afterwards at no additional charge.

Blanding’s turtles are endangered in Illinois and threatened nationwide, but the Chicago Zoological Society (CZS), in collaboration with the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, is leading an initiative to increase the local wild population. The breeding and release program includes a new outdoor Blanding’s turtle habitat at the zoo’s Dragonfly Marsh exhibit.

Jasiri, a 7½-year-old giraffe at Brookfield Zoo, gave birth to a male calf on June 21. The first-time mom gave birth outside in an off-exhibit area. Soon after being born, the 173-pound, 5-foot-9-inch-tall calf stood and was nursing not long after that.

It is not exactly a stampede, but the sound of little hooves can be heard at Brookfield Zoo with the birth of an addax antelope on June 7 and several more are expected in the coming weeks.
