Staff and guests of Brookfield Zoo celebrated a milestone birthday on July 18, 2011, for Maggie, a Bornean orangutan who lives in the Asia section of Tropic World. Maggie turned 50 and ape-lovers of all ages came out to celebrate.

Guests should keep their eyes to the sky for a glimpse of small, orange primates in the trees at Brookfield Zoo. Now through mid-September, a pair of golden lion tamarins (called GLTs) named Shadow and Penny have been released in the wooded area just east of Indian Lake.

The Chicago Zoological Society is pleased to announce that an okapi (pronounced oh-KAH-pi) was born on April 27. The unnamed female calf and her mom Semliki, 8, are doing well. Currently, the calf spends the majority of her time off exhibit, but zoo guests may be lucky and catch glimpses of her with Semliki in their outdoor yard at Habitat Africa! The Forest. Since her birth, the calf has spent the majority of her time in a quiet nesting area located off exhibit. When she is about 3 months old, guests will be able to see her spending more time outdoors.

Polar Bears International (PBI) will present its prestigious “Champion for Polar Bears” award to the Chicago Zoological Society (CZS) on Saturday, May 7, recognizing the Society for its acclaimed climate awareness programs and polar bear initiatives at Brookfield Zoo. At the same time, American Airlines will receive the “Paw of Approval” award for its collaboration with CZS in advancing conservation efforts throughout the world and its sustainable business practices.

Brookfield Zoo is thrilled to announce the birth of 10 African wild dog puppies. The pups, born on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 2010, are currently off exhibit with their mother Kim, 6, father Digger, 4, and Digger’s brother Duke, 4. Today, veterinarians performed physicals that included routine vaccinations and sexing of the 8-week-old pups. Just like vaccinating a family dog, they will receive additional inoculations at 12 weeks and 16 weeks of age.

It has been nearly a decade since Przewalski’s horses (pronounced shuh-VAHL-skeez) resided at Brookfield Zoo. That changed this fall when three mares arrived at the zoo from National Zoo’s Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Virginia. Guests can now see Olivia, 21, April, 20, and May, 20, on exhibit in a newly refurbished habitat along 31st Street, on the zoo’s north side.
Przewalski’s horses, which were exhibited consistently at Brookfield Zoo between 1955 and 2001, are named after Colonel Nikolai Przewalksi, the first Western scientist to observe the species and to describe the horses in writing in 1878.

Lions, polar bears, orangutans, white pelicans, and giraffes were the subjects of more than 320 photos that were submitted in the Chicago Zoological Society’s 2010 Photo Contest. A panel of professional photographers judged the photos, from which they selected a grand prize winner and first-, second, and third-place winners in an adult and child category. The winning photos are on display in Brookfield Zoo’s Discovery Center lobby through the end of the year.

According to the American Dental Hygienists’ Association, October is National Dental Hygiene Month. Even though the association’s focus is on promoting good oral hygiene in humans, animals need to have healthy teeth, too. That is why three times a week the Animal Care staff at Brookfield Zoo makes brushing the teeth of the seals and sea lions a part of the animals’ preventive health care.

A record-setting dolphin study by the Chicago Zoological Society (CZS) and Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium has received a national award just in time for its 40th anniversary this month. The joint program earned top honors in the 2010 North American Conservation Award category from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).
