A record-setting dolphin study by the Chicago Zoological Society (CZS) and Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium has received a national award just in time for its 40th anniversary this month. The joint program earned top honors in the 2010 North American Conservation Award category from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).

Chicago Zoological Society staff Agnes Kovacs, manager of school groups and teacher programs, and Steve Pine, communications manager, will travel to the tundra near Churchill, Manitoba, Canada, in early October for a week-long Communicators Leadership Camp sponsored by Polar Bears International (PBI), a conservation group.

Bear lovers of all ages will 'bear-ly' be able to contain their excitement at Brookfield Zoo’s Bear Awareness Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, October 2 and 3. The celebration takes place from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Great Bear Wilderness exhibit and will feature activities highlighting the zoo’s grizzly bears and brown bears.

Two orphaned California sea lion pups have a new home at the zoo. They are currently off exhibit and getting acclimated to their new surroundings and the zoo’s other sea lions and learning how to swim before they venture out into the bigger pools at the Pinniped Point exhibit. Staff estimate it will be several more weeks before they will be able to have access to the outdoor pools. The two unnamed female pups, born on June 7 and June 10, were abandoned by their moms at a popular tourist attraction—Pier 39 in San Francisco—which is a highly unusual place for a California sea lion to give birth.

Chicago Zoological Society’s Animal Programs staff released five American white pelicans at Brookfield Zoo’s Formal Pool on Tuesday, August 24, 2010. The birds were rescued from the Gulf Coast as a result of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

Brookfield Zoo is saddened to announce the loss of Leah, a 37-year-old bald eagle who had resided at the zoo’s Children Zoo for 31 years. She was euthanized today due to a prolonged respiratory issue that was complicated by her advanced age. According to several sources, in the wild, bald eagles can live up to an average of 25 to 30 years.

Brookfield Zoo’s Zoo Tunes, the free summer concert series presented by Bank of America, features pop star Belinda this Sunday, July 18. Guests can listen to a trio of performers, including Belinda, Grupo 2012, and DJ Jesse El Grandote, starting at 3:00 on the zoo's East Mall.

On Saturday, July 10, come out of your shell and head to Brookfield Zoo to join in a birthday celebration for Corky, a 65-year-old American red-bellied turtle. Corky, who was purchased from a dime store in 1945, was donated to Brookfield Zoo 30 years ago.

Since late September 2009, Cookie, a Major Mitchell’s cockatoo at Brookfield Zoo, has been off exhibit in Perching Bird House enjoying his golden years and spending quality time with his keepers. But on Saturday, June 26, at 10:30 a.m., he made a public appearance for a very special occasion: his 77th birthday celebration, sponsored by American Airlines.
