The year marks the 40th year of the Sarasota Dolphin Research Program, part of the Florida Dolphin Research and Conservation Institute (DRCI), which is supported by the Chicago Zoological Society. Based in Sarasota, FL, this is the world’s longest-running study of a wild dolphin population, focusing on many aspects of dolphin biology, including health, behavior, genetics, environmental change, and adverse interactions with humans.

More than 350 photos featuring polar bears, tigers, butterflies, lizards, and many other creatures of the animal kingdom were submitted for the Chicago Zoological Society’s 2009 Photo Contest. A panel of professional photographers had the tough assignment of selecting a grand prize winner, as well as first-, second-, and third-place winners in the adult and child categories. The winning photos are on display in Brookfield Zoo’s Discovery Center lobby through mid December 2009.

Carver, the oldest southern hairy-nosed wombat on record, died yesterday (Oct. 1, 2009) at 34 years of age. Carver, a charismatic marsupial and significant wildlife ambassador for his counterparts in the wild, sired nine offspring at Brookfield Zoo.

Cookie, a 76-year-old Major Mitchell’s cockatoo, has become one of Brookfield Zoo's most famous animals and he’s the only remaining member of the original animal collection from 1934. Now a senior citizen, Cookie has taken up permanent residence in the keepers’ office at Perching Bird House, allowing him to retire in familiar and comfortable off-exhibit accommodations.
