Orphaned Sea Lion Pups Find Home at Brookfield Zoo

Two orphaned California sea lion pups have a new home at the zoo. They are currently off exhibit and getting acclimated to their new surroundings and the zoo’s other sea lions and learning how to swim before they venture out into the bigger pools at the Pinniped Point exhibit. Staff estimate it will be several more weeks before they will be able to have access to the outdoor pools. The two unnamed female pups, born on June 7 and June 10, were abandoned by their moms at a popular tourist attraction—Pier 39 in San Francisco—which is a highly unusual place for a California sea lion to give birth.  more...

Rescued Pelicans from Gulf Oil Spill Released at Brookfield Zoo

Chicago Zoological Society’s Animal Programs staff released five American white pelicans at Brookfield Zoo’s Formal Pool on Tuesday, August 24, 2010. The birds were rescued from the Gulf Coast as a result of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.  more...

Leah Bald Eagle Passes Away

Brookfield Zoo is saddened to announce the loss of Leah, a 37-year-old bald eagle who had resided at the zoo’s Children Zoo for 31 years. She was euthanized today due to a prolonged respiratory issue that was complicated by her advanced age. According to several sources, in the wild, bald eagles can live up to an average of 25 to 30 years.  more...

Cookie Cockatoo Celebrates 77th Birthday

Since late September 2009, Cookie, a Major Mitchell’s cockatoo at Brookfield Zoo, has been off exhibit in Perching Bird House enjoying his golden years and spending quality time with his keepers. Trumpeter Swans Hatch at Brookfield Zoo

Trumpeter swan chicks, also known as cygnets, hatched on May 28 on Brookfield Zoo's Indian Lake, and can be seen with their parents during regular zoo hours. After Labor Day 2010, the swans will be transported to Iowa as part of the state’s Trumpeter Swan Restoration Program.  more...

CZS Researchers Study Effects of Oil Spill on Dolphins

CZS is pleased to announce that it is the recipient of a grant from Morris Animal Foundation’s Betty White Wildlife Rapid Response Fund. The grant CZS received is providing its scientists with funding to conduct research on the effects the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico could have on dolphins living in the region.  more...
