The best way to connect children to nature is by providing them with opportunities to be in nature, to touch it, smell it, and care for it. These experiences provide opportunities for children to see their connection to nature and how taking care of it results in a better planet for all of us.

Learning about animals, bugs, plants, and water conservation establishes a model for day-to-day activities at home, at school, and in the community. When a child learns that bees pollinate certain plants that supply our food, they take an interest, not only in bees but also in the plants that provide the nectar for the bee’s survival.

These are the types of connections children make at our summer and winter camps here at Brookfield Zoo. Through hands-on activities, crafts, games, and animal encounters, enthusiastic and experienced camp counselors help them develop a reciprocal relationship with nature, teaching children to become conscientious about conservation.
