Brookfield Zoo Endocrinology Service Lab

General Information

We employ enzyme-immunoassay (EIA) techniques to measure reproductive and adrenal steroid hormones in serum, and hormone metabolites in feces, urine, and saliva.

We especially focus on non-invasive service work and research that contributes to wildlife conservation and/or helps to improve welfare of wild and captive animals.

We have a list that contains our currently validated assays, but the lab will attempt to validate any assay on any terrestrial species or marine mammal (saliva only).

We also perform training and consulting services as well as assistance to graduate students on a case by case basis. For inquiries on these opportunities please contact Jocelyn.Bryant@czs.org.

The Research Team
Jocelyn Bryant, Endocrinology Lab Manager, received her B.S. in Wildlife Ecology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1999), and completed her M.S. in Biology from the University of Nebraska (2010). Jocelyn became interested in behavioral endocrinology while working as a zookeeper at the Brookfield Zoo and volunteering in the endocrinology lab. After deciding to pursue research and science full-time, she went on to work as a lab manager at the University of Chicago for one year where she set up an Enzyme-Immuno Assay Lab for the Biopsychological Sciences Building. Jocelyn then returned to the Brookfield Zoo endocrinology lab in 2006 as the lab manager. In the past 8 years, she has collaborated on various research projects with other AZA accredited institutions as well as becoming a board member for ISWE (International Society of Wildlife Endocrinology). She has also begun training, consulting and educating others on hormone extraction techniques and enzyme-immuno assays (EIA), staying on top of innovation, and publishing relevant data to the zoo and animal welfare community.

Invaluable volunteers, interns and students assist the lab manager year-round in all aspects of fecal hormone analyses, in addition to overall lab maintenance and upkeep.

Sample collection protocols and pricing information are available upon request.
