Chicago Zoological Society (CZS) needs energetic, enthusiastic, and friendly people to join the Brookfield Zoo seasonal staff!
The zoo is open every day of the year and recruits seasonal employees heaviest during late winter/early spring of each year to prepare for our peak season from Memorial Weekend through Labor Day Weekend. We also recruit during summer, fall, and winter. Seasonal positions are temporary in nature.

Seasonal Keeper- Seven Seas/Marine Mammals
Under close supervision, provide general care for animals and perform related work of maintaining buildings, grounds, and interpretives in assigned area. Inform, assist, and direct guests as necessary. Prepare and distribute food as directed. Observe assigned animals closely, routinely, and objectively report to supervisor on their behavior, health, and welfare. Observe condition of assigned area(s), animal enclosures, and equipment. Keep animal records as assigned. Monitor and clean public space(s), plants, and interpretives as assigned. Report maintenance needs. Perform minor maintenance tasks as assigned. Clean animal enclosures, pools, and service areas as assigned. Monitor guests to ensure animal and human safety and protection of park property. Communicate with and assist guests. Take initiative to facilitate guests’ appreciation of animals and enjoyment of their zoo visit. Demonstrate knowledge of and implement zoo-wide and area emergency procedures as directed. High school graduate or equivalent required. Bachelor's degree or college coursework in relevant biological field preferred or equivalent combination of training and experience. Animal care facility, farm, kennel, or equivalent animal experience required. Incumbent must possess an understanding of practical principles of animal behavior and ability to work with live animals safely. Good interpersonal skills. Requires the ability to interact in a courteous and professional manner. Knowledge of natural history, zoology, or animal husbandry preferred. Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language fluently. Spanish fluency a plus. Must be a minimum of 18 years old with a valid driver’s license. SCUBA Certification required upon hire. This is a temporary position with rotating shifts, including weekends, holidays, and evenings. Starting salary: $9.75per hour.
Dishwasher (Seasonal)
This position is required to clean all dishes, glasses, flatware, pots, pans, equipment, etc. for the Catered Events Department. The position is also responsible for the proper cleaning and storage of all service pieces. Washes and scrubs all dishes, flatware, utensils pots, pans and equipment to departmental specifications. Sorts flatware and stores all dishes, glasses flatware and all kitchenware in their proper vessels/storage areas. Takes out trash throughout the day and at the end of the day. Cleanly sweeps and mops the kitchen floor throughout the day and at the end of the day. Helps plate up food when needed. High school diploma or equivalent training or experience preferred. Strong customer service and organizational skills required. Must be prompt and reliable. Spanish fluency a plus, but not required. This seasonal position requires a flexible, creative person who is able to work weekends, evenings and holidays as required. Dishwashers are scheduled to start at approximately 6:30 p.m. and work as late as 2:00 a.m. Starting salary $ 8.90 per hour.
Community Relations Assistant–Seasonal (Bilingual)
This position contributes to the success of the Chicago Zoological Society by planning and facilitating outreach programs in designated communities in the Chicagoland area to support the Society’s mission of inspiring conservation leadership and to ensure that the CZS mission is relevant to all audiences. Develop, prepare and implement programs within designated Chicagoland communities to reach underserved audiences. These programs include off-site workshops, staffing outreach booths and related activities, field trips, special programs and other activities for families and youth. Develop and maintain relationships with program participants and their families. Ensure program materials and communication tools are culturally sensitive and relevant for CZS. Provide assistance with Spanish translation for community messages. Assist with other community relations department projects and other projects and related duties as assigned. Minimum Associates Degree or equivalent combination of training and/or experience in education, science, communications, social services or other related field required. Minimum 1 year experience working with community outreach programs required. Not-for-profit experience preferred. Effective problem-solving and decision-making skills. Good written/composition, verbal communication skills, and effective listening skills required. English and Spanish fluency required. Excellent telephone etiquette. Computer proficiency required, including Microsoft Windows, MS Word. Experience with MS Excel preferred. Experience and/or ability to work and interact effectively with a diverse, multicultural audience and wide range of constituencies. Experience working within urban communities required. Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, volunteers and the general public. Strong customer service skills required. Good organization skills and attention to detail required. A genuine interest in science and nature and a desire to share this passion through innovative children and family programs required. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment. Must be able to work effectively as a member of a team, as well as independently. Valid driver’s license required. Seasonal Craftsman – Creative Services
Seasonal Craftsman-Creative Services Perform semi-skilled and unskilled duties throughout the park with direct guidance, including routine tasks such as performing general shop cleaning/maintenance and cleaning of exhibit signage associated with preventive maintenance, inventory, special repairs, special events, emergency and safety, unanticipated special repairs, and unanticipated capital projects. Assist Creative Services shop workers in inspections of signage, interactive devices, and special event decorations as directed. Perform routine repairs as directed. Perform routine cleaning of signage, interactive devices and special event decorations as directed. Perform routine deliveries of signage, decorations or other design related materials using a flatbed cart or other vehicles to various locations within the zoo. Ensure all work takes place with the least disruption to guests, staff, and the animal collection. Assist in ensuring that proper signage is utilized and safety barricades are in place. Perform tasks associated with the department’s functional programs with direct guidance. Assist in routine inspections of functional, structural and aesthetic systems in exhibits and facilities. Provide supervisor with information relating to needed repairs and improvements in exhibits and facilities. Assures work meets the Creative Services shop’s quality control standards and compliance with all standard operating procedures. Learn and participate in the section’s emergency response program. Observe and comply with all animal programs protocols when performing work in or around animal areas. Complete daily labor allocation sheets with direct guidance. Attend and participate in meetings as assigned. High School graduate or equivalent combination of training/experience preferred. One year minimum general construction experience required. Must be at least 18 years of age. Must have ability to read, write, and perform all required math commensurate with field of responsibility. Familiarity with hand and power tool operation desired. Must be able to assist in performing all tasks related to field and possess skills in related fields. Must be able to work in a team environment. Ability to work well with minimal supervision required. Good communications and interpersonal skills required. This seasonal position requires the incumbent to work an eight-hour day in all weather conditions. Valid driver’s license required. Illinois residents must possess a valid Illinois license within 90 days of hire. Valid out-of-state license required for out-of-state residents. One or more of the following licensures may be required: Valid "C" or "B" (CDL) Driver's License. Valid medical authorization card required for positions responsible for operating a Commercial Motor Vehicle driving responsibilities. Spanish fluency a plus, but not required. Employees must provide their own steel-toed safety shoes. Starting salary: $9.75 per hour.
Senior Illustrator (Seasonal)
This position contributes to the success of the Chicago Zoological Society by producing illustration and three-dimensional work in a variety of styles and media that appropriately communicate information about animals, the natural world, and conservation to facilitate an exceptional guest experience. Illustrate animals and related images in a variety of media to specifications established with clients and project designers. Design and illustrate banners, signs, and other graphics that communicate to educate, raise funds, or enhance the recreational potential of the zoo. Assist other illustrators and the designers in meeting their goals by consulting on accuracy of animal renderings and use of materials and color, and by maintaining reference files. Bachelor of Fine Arts degree or related field or equivalent combination of training and experience required. Minimum of 6 years experience as an illustrator, working with live subjects, required. Ability to render animals in a variety of styles and media required. Must have the ability to work independently and in teams. Ability to organize large, complex projects, and to develop and monitor schedules and budgets required. Must have the ability to work non-standard hours such as evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed for special events, covering the daily schedule, or to complete work during busy periods. Valid driver’s license required. Illinois residents must possess a valid Illinois license within 90 days of hire. Valid out-of-state license required for out-of-state residents. Spanish fluency a plus, but not required. Work schedules are based on the needs of the operation. The typical work schedule is an average of 15-20 hours per week. Starting salary $15.48 per hour.
Dispatcher/EMT (Seasonal)
This position contributes to the success of the Chicago Zoological Society by responding to calls from employees and guests for emergency and routine assistance assuring a positive and safe guest experience. Coordinates all radio communications for the Police and Life Safety Departments and the Society, in general. Answers incoming calls into the Police Department and dispatches Police units accordingly. Provides emergency medical aid to guests and employees as needed. Operates the communication center for the Police and Life Safety Departments and the Society, in general. Promptly answers calls to the station and dispatches Police units accordingly. Maintains incidents cards for responding units. Provides emergency medical assistance to guests and staff and performs ambulance duty as required. Medical assistance includes, but is not limited to patient transports, extrication, loading and unloading patient onto stretcher and in/out of the ambulance, and CPR/AED to basic life saving under the guidelines set by Loyola Medical Center. Completes required internal and state reports. Contacts and coordinates communications with municipal agencies during emergencies and non-emergencies as necessary. Maintains the Society’s Lost and Found service for guests and staff. Monitor the weather and fire alarm systems and notifies manager of identified issues. Other related duties as assigned. Associate's degree in Criminal Justice or equivalent combination of related training and experience required. Minimum 1 to 2 years experience preferred in police/EMS dispatching and guest relations. Emergency Medical Technician certification required; must remain current in Emergency Medical Services continuing education as mandated per licensing requirements. Must be able to handle emergency situations calmly and be able to work effectively at all levels of the emergency response. Must be flexible and able to respond and adapt to changes and shifting priorities. Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely and have strong interpersonal skills. Eye for accuracy, completeness, and detail. Ability to juggle multiple projects and priorities. Must have a high level of energy, be self motivated, possess excellent verbal and written communication and organizational skills and must promote excellence in customer (internal and external) service. Position requires rotating days off, varied starting times, working weekends and holidays and other schedule changes due to special events. Valid driver’s license required. Illinois residents must possess a valid Illinois license within 90 days of hire. Valid out-of-state license required for out-of-state residents. Food Service Attendant (Seasonal)
Food Service Attendants prepare food, operate a cash register, bus tables and serve zoo guests at food locations throughout the zoo. Additional duties include cleaning, stocking, taking physical inventories and providing assistance and information to guests. Must quickly and efficiently accommodate the guests’ needs and remain accurate and accountable for all transactions on a cash register system. Excellent communication and people skills required. Some experience interacting with the public desirable. Position requires holiday and weekend work as needed. Spanish fluency a plus, but not required. Starting pay $8.55/hour.
Marketing Events Assistant (Seasonal)
Responsible for the set-up and breakdown of all Marketing/Special Events at the zoo and provides support for zoo outreach programs in the community and will be Brookfield Zoo ambassadors at weekend festivals and events outside the confines of the park. They will be responsible for such things as the scheduling, transporting, staffing, and upkeep of the zoo's outreach booth as well as learning and delivering a variety of information, materials and activities related to the zoo and animals. Will assist in the event set-up, execution and tear-down including the set up and take down of tables, chairs, and canopies. Sets up craft activities and assists with crafts as necessary. Erects banners and signage for zoo events. Sets up and monitors sound equipment, troubleshooting any problems. Delivers supplies and/or product samples, etc. to designated event areas in the zoo. Escorts entertainment and media within the park and transports equipment. Dresses in costume and escorts costume characters as needed and participates in non-event day activities such as local parades. Requires a High School diploma or equivalent training and experience. Pursuing a degree in marketing or communications desired. Must have strong customer service skills. Must be available to work weekdays, weekends, holidays and evenings. Valid Illinois driver's license required for Illinois residents within 30 days of hire. Valid driver’s license for out-of-state residents. Starting salary: $11.25 per hour.
Banquet Server (Seasonal)
Acts as server at food and beverage functions held at the zoo. Assisting with setting up the dining, reception and staging areas for scheduled events by referring to the Banquet Event Order (BEO). Organize bussing station and prepare coffee service, champagne, butter, and bread baskets. Follow safe food handling procedures in accordance with established food service sanitation practices. Requires strong communication and interpersonal skills, outstanding customer service orientation and attention to detail. Ability to maintain 100% customer satisfaction under pressure and with deadlines required. Ability to work well with little supervision and available to work weekends, holidays and late evening events required. Spanish fluency a plus, but not required. Starting salary $11.25 per hour.
