Some of the animals at Brookfield Zoo received some heart-shaped treats for Valentine’s Day. The bottlenose dolphins, sea lions, harbor seals, and grey seals seemed to enjoy heart-shaped ice and gelatin treats. And, the western lowland gorillas were given some nutritious heart-shaped cookies made of ground primate biscuit, oatmeal, bananas, raisins, and peanut butter!

Two kangaroo joeys born at Brookfield Zoo are now exploring their outdoor habitat at the Australia House exhibit. The joeys, born on February 20 and March 13 of last year to moms Daisy, 7½, and Sheila, 11, have been spending more time out of their mothers’ pouches. The 10- and 11-month-old joeys began hopping around and exploring their new surroundings this past November and just this month, respectively...

With only 58 Mexican gray wolves living in the wild in New Mexico and Arizona, a 4½-year-old female Mexican gray wolf is leaving Brookfield Zoo, which is managed by the Chicago Zoological Society, to prepare to enter the wild. The release to the wild would help bolster the population of this endangered species.

The Chicago Zoological Society is happy to announce the birth of a litter of Dwarf Mongoose puppies at Brookfield Zoo’s Habitat Africa: Kopje. The litter was born on September 13 to female “Tavi” and the dominant male in the group. This is Tavi’s first litter and the puppies are now out of the nest cavity and actively visible on exhibit. The family group includes the adult female Tavi, two adult males (Eugene and Gimbi) and three puppies.

The Chicago Zoological Society (CZS) is leading an initiative to help bring rescued, non-releasable southern hairy-nosed wombats from Australia to North America to ensure a sustainable population in zoos. On July 11, Brookfield Zoo welcomed two wombats that were orphaned in Australia. They will eventually go to Toronto Zoo in Canada and hopefully breed...read more

JoJo, a 32-year-old male silverback gorilla from Lincoln Park Zoo, is now at Brookfield Zoo as part of a breeding program for the critically endangered western lowland gorilla species. A bison calf born on May 16, 2012 is on exhibit in the bison yard of Great Bear Wilderness. The female calf marks the first birth of this species at Brookfield Zoo since the early 1970s. Hours after his birth on Feb. 14, 2012, Animal Programs staff became concerned about a male black-footed cat’s well-being because his 4-year-old mother, Cleo, appeared not to be providing proper maternal care. The kitten was not nursing and his body temperature was alarmingly low. Additionally, he was significantly underweight at birth. To ensure that he had a chance for survival, staff quickly decided to intervene...

Students from the Chicago High School for Agricultural Science enjoyed a unique "Shadow Opportunity" at Brookfield Zoo.This is the third annual Shadow Opportunity for juniors and seniors from CHSAS, who are selected to partner with a Brookfield Zoo crew member who is in a profession of interest to the student.
