CZS is leading a collaboration of zoological, education, science, and research specialists in developing plans for a national Climate Literacy Zoo Education Network (CliZEN). The initiative, which is the first of its kind for zoos, will explore new approaches to science education by connecting zoo and aquarium visitors to polar animals—including polar bears—whose lives are threatened by climate change.

Students in grades 5th through 12th from six Chicago Public Schools (CPS) participated in the 2nd annual Chicago Zoological Society science fair held February 25 at Brookfield Zoo. By early spring, Habitat Africa: The Savannah should be literally filled with puppy love. 10 African wild dog puppies, born on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 2010, are currently off exhibit with their mother Kim, 6, father Digger, 4, and Digger’s brother Duke, 4.
The pups, 6 males and 4 females, will remain off exhibit until spring, at which time they will have access to their outdoor area at Habitat Africa! The Savannah...

Seeking new ways to help people understand the impact of climate change, the National Science Foundation program on Climate Change Education has awarded a $1 million grant to the Chicago Zoological Society (CZS). Nine partner zoos will collaborate on new approaches to connecting zoo visitors to polar animals that are endangered by climate change.

Now through mid-September, a pair of golden lion tamarins named Diabo and Delilah has been released in the wooded area just east of Indian Lake. The release provides the monkeys with the opportunity to learn how to catch insects and climb in the trees in an outdoor environment.

The addition of a CT scanner at Brookfield Zoo will add to its world-class imaging suite. Donated by Loyola University Medical Center, this new piece of equipment enhances the zoo’s diagnostic capabilities and gives the Chicago Zoological Society the distinction of having the best, most comprehensive imaging suite in a North American zoo.

The Chicago Zoological Society is now accepting applications for the Youth Volunteer Corps (YVC). This unique conservation leadership program was created for high school students to learn more about the animals and exhibits at the Zoo while at the same time educating guests. Youth earn valuable career training experience in a fun, social environment.

Veterinarian Mike Adkesson, from Chicago Zoological Society's Brookfield Zoo, reports from the coast of Peru on wildlife populations, including South American fur seals. Mike is leading a zoo vet team to understand what threatens the local wildlife population, as they study factors such as disease, environmental contamination, and other health related concerns.
