There's a new kid on the Tropic World block and you should swing on by and see him! A male white-cheeked gibbon was born on November 15, 2011, and the almost two-month-old infant—along with his mom, Indah; dad, Benny; and 2-year-old brother, Thani—can be seen on exhibit in the zoo’s Tropic World: Asia exhibit daily between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Brookfield Zoo, is happy to announce the addition of two young snow leopards—just in time for the holiday season. Guests visiting the zoo during the day or evening during its annual Holiday Magic celebration can view the cats in their outdoor habitat at The Fragile Kingdom.

The Chicago Zoological Society is one of 100 nonprofit organizations that were awarded a vehicle for outreach and education efforts as part of Toyota’s “100 Cars for Good” program. Today, November 16, CZS staff received a Sienna minivan during a special presentation at Continental Toyota, located in Countryside.

Nearly 400 images, including everything from snakes, lizards, and butterflies to lions, birds, and giraffes were submitted for the Chicago Zoological Society’s 2011 Photo contest. A panel of professional photographers judged the photos, from which they selected a grand prize winner and
first-, second-, and third-place winners in adult and child (11 and under) categories. The winning photos are on display in Brookfield Zoo’s Discovery Center lobby. They may also be viewed online at www.CZS.org/PhotoContest.

Have you met the new bear in town, Kartik? A male sloth bear, Kartik is an energetic two-year-old that loves to tear things up…exhibit walls, trees, grass…you name it! He will be paired up with eight-year-old female Hani, a dominant sloth bear who has resided at Brookfield Zoo for a while now. If the two successfully breed, hopefully Brookfield Zoo’s sloth bear population will double—females often give birth to twins!

Staff and guests of Brookfield Zoo celebrated a milestone birthday on July 18, 2011, for Maggie, a Bornean orangutan who lives in the Asia section of Tropic World. Maggie turned 50 and ape-lovers of all ages came out to celebrate.

Guests should keep their eyes to the sky for a glimpse of small, orange primates in the trees at Brookfield Zoo. Now through mid-September, a pair of golden lion tamarins (called GLTs) named Shadow and Penny have been released in the wooded area just east of Indian Lake.

The Chicago Zoological Society is pleased to announce that an okapi (pronounced oh-KAH-pi) was born on April 27. The unnamed female calf and her mom Semliki, 8, are doing well. Currently, the calf spends the majority of her time off exhibit, but zoo guests may be lucky and catch glimpses of her with Semliki in their outdoor yard at Habitat Africa! The Forest. Since her birth, the calf has spent the majority of her time in a quiet nesting area located off exhibit. When she is about 3 months old, guests will be able to see her spending more time outdoors.
