The birth of a Bornean orangutan at Brookfield Zoo draws attention to a primate species under dire threat in the wild. The female, born on the evening of October 6, is only the second birth of an orangutan expected in an accredited North American zoo this year.

AZA acclaims the Chicago Zoological Society (CZS) with one of its most prestigious honors: the Edward H. Bean Award. Fittingly, the award is named after the first director of Brookfield Zoo, and this year it recognizes the zoo for its pioneering conservation of Goeldi's monkeys (commonly called callimicos).

Dedicated conservationists will go to great lengths to protect wild orangutans. Asril, quarantine director for the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Program, is a case in point. This fall, he traveled from his home in northern Sumatra in Indonesia to the other side of the globe—Brookfield Zoo—in order to help the endangered species.
