Australia House is one of Brookfield Zoo’s original exhibit buildings, and features diurnal and nocturnal indoor exhibits as well as several large outdoor enclosures.

A large and diverse collection of Australasian animals are found at Australia House. Kangaroos, bats, echidnas, owls, parrots, snakes, frogs, tree kangaroos, feather-tailed gliders, bettongs, emus, and a cassowary represent an array of the animals native to the region.

Interns will get the unique opportunity to work with some animals (such as the Southern hairy-nosed wombat) which are rarely kept outside of their native home. Brookfield Zoo is one of only three zoos in the United States to house these wombats.

Interns receive practical, hands-on experience in keeper duties and learn many aspects of captive animal management. They will be exposed to record keeping, diet preparation, enclosure maintenance, and behavioral management.
