The Swamp Internship
Over 60 species of animals that are naturally found in southern cypress swamps and Illinois river habitats are found in this exhibit, which immerses visitors in the sights, sounds, and smells of wetlands.
Mammals, waterfowl, wading and perching birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates are all represented. Many of the inhabitants of The Swamp have come from wildlife rehabilitators and require special exhibit design and care. The Swamp also presents a strong interpretive program of graphics and visitor interactive experiences regarding the benefits of wetlands.
Interns will gain hands-on experience working alongside keepers through the building’s three areas. They will prepare food, assist with animal procedures and medications, monitor water quality, learn basic animal training, and understand the application of behavioral enrichment.
Interns will work with keepers who have a wide variety of experience and individual interests, which offers interns in The Swamp a unique opportunity to delve further into areas of animal husbandry, behavioral enrichment, and even public education.
