Responsibilities:
The Assistant Lead Custodian is expected to perform a variety of duties which may include, but are not limited to the following. Specific assignments will vary depending upon operating needs, the nature of the work performed, and/or specific areas(s) assigned. Supervises and performs major Custodial Department functions. Associate Veterinarian, Animal Programs

Since the opening of Brookfield Zoo in 1934, the Society has had an international reputation for cutting-edge animal care and innovative wildlife conservation.

The Chicago Zoological Society is looking for an Associate Veterinarian as a member of a strong Veterinary Services team committed to providing high quality veterinary care. Our veterinary staff works with a world class animal collection that is undergoing a robust development phase. The Associate Veterinarian would be a member of our Center for the Science of Animal Well-Being contributing to our knowledge of animal welfare science. Our team includes Clinical Veterinarians active in AAZV, ACZM and AZA programs, Veterinary Technician staff, and full clinical laboratory support in house. The Zoo Animal Hospital is a well-equipped 20,000 square foot facility which includes digital radiology and a CT scanner is being added to the diagnostic modalities. Strong academic partnerships include veterinary residency, veterinary student externships and full on-site diagnostic pathology service through the University Of Illinois College Of Veterinary Medicine. Research programs undertaken by veterinary staff include field studies as well as applied clinical research.

This position performs as a clinical veterinarian providing medical and surgical treatment to the animal collection as well as conducting clinical and health related investigations, thereby meeting operational goals of Veterinary Services.

Responsibilities:
Assumes responsibility for providing comprehensive medical care from a preventative medical approach including, but not limited to, physical examinations, disease and parasite prophylaxis, treatment and quarantine procedures. Observes and examines animals at exhibit site locations. Responds to information and requests from animal managers and keepers concerning potential or emergency medical care for domestic and exotic species in the animal collection. Administers and monitors anesthesia to examine, treat, transport or capture collection animals, when appropriate. Prescribes, administers and evaluates results of: diagnostic examinations, radiographs and clinical pathology specimens including microbiology, blood samples and fecal tests. Recognizes various symptoms, diagnoses and isolates causes of acute or chronic illnesses, infectious and noninfectious diseases, or injuries affecting animals in the collection. Performs minor or major surgical procedures and/or administers medications using currently accepted veterinary standards to properly treat, cure and/or control the affliction. In consultation with Senior Taxon Specialists, determines when animals require euthanasia due to their medical condition, age, or quality of life. Performs this procedure when appropriate. Remains current on pertinent regulations and standards (federal, state, industry, etc.) which may affect zoo programs and provide recommendations for complying with relevant regulations. Documents and prepares written record(s) of any procedure conducted on any animal in the collection and ensures the record is incorporated into the animal’s permanent medical record. Assists in the management of the permanent medical records of the Department. Provides medical screening, quarantine examination, certification of health and/or crating of animals for new acquisitions and/or shipments of animals from the zoo. Coordinates with Zoo Pathology Program staff concerning histopathology and post-mortem examinations to ensure recording, dissemination and application of results. Directs investigative clinical research on conditions affecting the health of the animal collection. Directs and assists in health related research on captive and free-ranging wildlife. Provides veterinary assistance as needed to other research efforts. Develops and maintains professional contacts with veterinarians of other zoos and professional organizations, nationally and internationally. Supervises the maintenance, internal and external use, and distribution of departmental records. In collaboration with the Data Manager, accesses information for the purpose of investigating health or medical related problems. Participate in regular department meetings with Animal Program Managers. Participates in the mentorship and teaching of veterinary students and post-graduate trainees. This includes oversight and direction of the students in the areas of veterinary care, zoo animal biology, clinical investigation and zoo operations. Requirements:
Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from an institution accredited or recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association required. Must hold and maintain valid veterinary license (if non-Illinois licensed, must become Illinois licensed within 6 months), DEA license, and USDA/APHIS accreditation. Minimum of four years experience or training in exotic animal veterinary medicine required. Marine mammal experience, particularly cetaceans, preferred. Board certification in the American College of Zoological Medicine strongly preferred. Must possess strong communication skills, a high level of energy, be self-motivated, and have a commitment to excellence. Catered Events Sales Coordinator, Catered Events, Guest Services

This position contributes to the success of the Chicago Zoological Society by providing support to the Catered Events department handling internal meetings, events, and group and contributing to department and Society operational and financial goals.

Responsibilities:
Provide service to our internal clients by taking the inquiry, finalizing the event details, e.g., food and beverage requirements, set-up needs, audio visual, signage, ticket requirements, and Motor Safari. Create banquet event orders detailing the client’s needs. Effectively distribute banquet event orders to the appropriate departments and to the client for verification and approval. Establish client budgets if the event necessitates and create events within their budget. Assure departments provide necessary approvals and departments are invoiced appropriately. Work with the Accounting Department on a monthly basis to ensure all invoices are charged correctly in Catermate and Navision and that accounting has received all of the invoices for the month. Coordinate details for VIP meetings and events with the Development Department, the Women’s Board, etc. Establish client budget if the event necessitates and create events within their budget. Coordinate special order items, i.e., linens, florals, etc., and follow the appropriate procedures for ordering these items, i.e., purchase orders, etc. Develop outside markets for advance ticket sales, group tours, and senior safari tours, etc., including prospecting senior centers, assisted living centers, and nursing homes. Coordinate between Catered Events and other Society-wide departments; maintain information flow in a timely manner. Communicate customer specifications and event details to events staff. Conduct follow-up with client following the event to ensure customer satisfaction. Manage meeting room requests of internal guests while balancing the needs of the Catered Events group sales. We are currently soliciting applications from qualified and experienced animal care professionals for placement on a hiring list for temporary positions.  The list will be used to select qualified candidates for temporary zookeeper positions which arise due to employee absences, leaves, and position vacancies.  These temporary assignments may range from several days or weeks to several months or more, depending on the particular assignment. Placement on the temporary keeper hiring list does not guarantee employment.

Qualified individuals selected for consideration will be placed on the list for a period of up to six months and may be contacted for temporary positions as they become available during that time.  Individuals wishing to be considered for a longer period of time must reapply. The successful candidate will serve as a member of the Society’s Executive Management Team and the senior leader for the Animal Care group.   • Ph.D. in Animal Biology, Zoology, or relevant field or equivalent combination of training and/or experience preferred. Masters Degree in these fields or equivalent combination of training/experience required.
  • Minimum 8-10 years in a General Curator or comparable (or higher) position at a management level.
  • AZA professional membership and involvement preferred.
  • Knowledge / familiarity with AZA accreditation standards, code of ethics and representative husbandry standards. Familiar with AZA or other captive population management programs. Familiarity with USDA and other regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities:
Supervise all membership regular and seasonal staff. This includes addressing Membership Services and Share the Care issues by ensuring that the workflow prioritization, established by the Manager of Membership Operations, is followed. Provide regular weekend report on Sunday afternoons. Assist Manager, Membership Operations in recruiting, hiring, and training of all seasonal employees. Develop comprehensive training materials and standard operating procedures for all departmental processes. Ensure that all revisions to the training materials and standard operating procedures are accurate and current on an ongoing basis in all document locations. Train new and temporary staff on membership customer service standards, record maintenance procedures, history batch procedures and all other departmental guidelines and procedures. Perform Quality Control audits on a regular basis to ensure consistency and accuracy. Process membership and Share the Care applications retrieved from various sales locations. Balance application totals to deposit totals according to batch deposit cover sheet. Address and fulfill miscellaneous member needs and requests associated to their membership applications (print and mail request for replacement card, make follow-up phone calls on applications incorrectly/incompletely filled out, etc.) Primary responsibility includes gift entry into Raiser’s Edge database; secondary responsibility includes updating of demographic data. Responsible for answering telephones (addressing member concerns, managing member expectations, seeking resolutions to problems expeditiously, fulfilling member requests, and efficiently providing these services in a professional manner to meet the expectations of the Society). Maintain archive of member correspondence in Raiser’s Edge. Other related duties as assigned.

Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Business Management or other related field or equivalent combination of training and/or experience required. Three years comparable management/supervisory business experience required. Experience in a membership or customer service department in a non-profit organization preferred. Computer proficiency required, preferably in Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook) required. Experience with Access and Blackbaud’s Raiser’s Edge database application preferred. Experience in data entry and/or telephone customer service required. Strong organizational and analytical skills required. Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills. Strong interpersonal skills and customer service orientation. Resourceful with excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality of privileged information. Requires good presentation skills and a participative, collaborative management style with respect to problem solving, staff supervision, project implementation and continuous improvement. Strong planning, analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities required. Must be able to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines. Requires proficiency in PC operation and software applications, including email, Internet, spreadsheet, word processing, and database packages. Must be able to maintain confidential information.
