Brookfield, Ill.—Hoof it over to Brookfield Zoo and join in the National Pig Day celebration on Sunday, March 1, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The annual holler-day brings recognition to one of the most intelligent farmyard animals: pigs. In Children’s Zoo, enjoy great pork-formances by resident porcines Harley and Penelope as they demonstrate some of their trained behaviors in their outdoor yards at 1:00 p.m. Afterwards, join staff in singing a rousing rendition of “Happy Pig Day” while the two domestic swine are treated to carrot bouquets. At 1:30 p.m., line up outside Children’s Zoo for the National Pig Day parade, led by the pink Pigmobile (curly tail and all!) and the zoo’s very own pig costumed character. The parade will conclude at Hamill Family Play Zoo, where youngsters of all ages can participate in pig-themed crafts and activities, including mud play, making pig puppets they can take home, and playing a scent game while learning about pigs. In addition, at 2:00 p.m. Laura Doherty from the Old Town School of Folk Music will be at the Play Zoo to entertain guests with animal- and pig-themed songs. First conceived in 1972 by two sisters, Ellen Stanley of Texas and Mary Lynne Rave of North Carolina, National Pig Day began as a way to honor and give thanks to pigs and has grown to become a national celebration of pigs’ best qualities and attributes. National Pig Day activities are free with regular zoo admission of $12 for adults and $8 for children 3-11 and seniors 65 and older. Children 2 and under are free. Parking is $8.
