Brookfield, Ill. — In celebration of the July 4^th holiday, several animals at Brookfield Zoo received red, white, and blue patriotic-themed enrichment from their animal care staff.

Hudson, one of the Zoo’s polar bears, and Axhi, a brown bear, each received a variety of fruit frozen inside red, white, and blue ice blocks. Axhi was also treated to corn on the cob—a popular side dish at 4^th of July picnics. Additionally, the California sea lions and grey seals seemed to enjoy their patriotic “Happy 4^th of July” ice and sugar-free gelatin enrichment and fish.

The animal care specialists are always thinking of ways to physically and mentally stimulate the animals at Brookfield Zoo. One way is by providing them with enrichment items they normally do not receive on a regular basis.
