Zenda's Root Canal

Zenda, one of our lions, recently received a root canal with the help of our consultant dentist, Dr. Stephen Juriga.  Just like people, animals can experience significant discomfort when a tooth is damaged and a root canal is a great way to alleviate that discomfort without removing the tooth.

Delicate Care for Rare Bird

The Micronesian kingfisher was once plentiful on the island of Guam, but its population was decimated following the introduction of brown tree snakes to the island in the 1940’s.  By 1988, the snake had completely eliminated all the wild kingfishers.  Prior to the bird going completely extinct, the government captured 29 of the last birds and placed them under professional care in zoos. Through careful animal management, veterinary care, and successful breeding, there are now over 150 of the birds in zoos, including two at Brookfield Zoo.

Grevy’s Zebra Born at Brookfield Zoo

A female Grevy’s zebra was born at Brookfield Zoo on July 7, 2015.  The nearly 100-pound foal can be seen with her mom, Kali, in a habitat located in the northwestern corner of the zoo. Grevy’s zebras, which are the largest of all wild equids, are listed as endangered. The species is now found only in its native habitat of northern Kenya and southern Ethiopia and is considered to be extinct in Somalia. Researchers estimate that the Grevy's zebra population has declined by more than 50 percent over the past two decades, with only approximately 2,000 remaining in the wild.

Endangered Mexican Gray Wolves Born at Brookfield Zoo

The Chicago Zoological Society is excited to announce the birth of a litter of Mexican gray wolves, who recently emerged from a den site at Brookfield Zoo’s Regenstein Wolf Woods habitat. Born in late May to first-time mother Zana, 3, and first-time father Flint, 5, the puppies are now becoming more active and visible. Guests have a chance to view them along with their parents playing and exploring their nearly two-acre outdoor environment.
