Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) SAFE North American Monarch Program

The migratory populations of monarch butterflies have experienced dramatic declines over recent decades. Eastern overwintering populations have decreased by approximately 80% and western populations have decreased by over 90%.

Brookfield Zoo Chicago participates in the AZA SAFE North American Monarch Program to help identify survival threats, support recovery, and offer you opportunities to learn more about at-risk species.

Threats

  • • Habitat loss and degradation (including breeding, nectaring, migratory and overwintering habitats)

  • • Pesticides

  • • Climate change

How We Care

  • • Brookfield Zoo Chicago cares for monarchs in the seasonal Butterflies! habitat.

  • • Through Partnership for Pollinators, the Zoo works with partners like the Illinois Monarch Project to:

  •     • Show the connection pollinators have to human culture and food security.

  •     • Inspire active engagement in pollinator conservation.
