Eric Hostnik, DVM, MS, Dipl ACVR-DI, Dipl ACVR-EDI

Role – Lead Radiologist, Leadership Team Member

Bio – As our lead radiologist at the ZARD and one of the founders of the American College of Veterinary Radiology’s Zoo, Exotic, and Wildlife Diagnostic Imaging Society (ZEWDIS), Dr. Eric brings a wealth of expertise and insight into the database. Dr. Eric earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Florida and completed his residency training at Ohio State University where he remains as tenured faculty. For Dr. Eric, imaging is essential in veterinary medicine regardless of species. Therefore, providing a tool that can improve the health care of ambassador individuals for their species feels to have a great impact on a more global scale. Whether he is contributing to an animal’s care in-person or through teleradiodiology, collaboration with zoo, exotic, and wildlife veterinarians is unique and makes the job of a radiologist more fulfilling.

Matt Kinney, DVM, Dipl ACZM

Role – Leadership Team Member

Bio -  Dr. Matt completed his zoological medicine residency through the University of California Davis and San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. Throughout his career, Dr. Matt has enjoyed mentoring students, residents, and visiting veterinarians because of how their passion and expertise augment the field of zoological medicine. For Dr. Matt, the ZARD is important in strengthening relationships and collaborations between zoo clinicians and radiologists interested in zoological medicine to improve the care we can provide to animals we are responsible for. The value of this database and the growth of the relationships required to develop and maintain ZARD make supporting this important initiative a no brainer.

John Pauley, CVT

Role – Leadership Team Member

Bio – Originally from Buffalo, NY, John has been working as a Certified Veterinary Technician for nearly 25 years. In addition to serving on the ZARD core leadership team, John is the Director of Operations for the Animal Health, Welfare & Science Department at Brookfield Zoo Chicago. He has been involved with the ZARD from conception and feels fortunate to collaborate in this ambitious and momentous initiative that will be an invaluable source of information. John is excited to see how the ZARD will significantly benefit conservation efforts and advance the level of veterinary care we’re able to provide to the incredible species we’re working collectively to conserve.

Joanna Webb, DVM, MS, Dipl ACZM

Role – Database Manager, Leadership Team Member

Bio – Dr. Joanna considers herself blessed to be serving as the manager for this transformative resource. She was first introduced to the Brookfield Zoo Chicago team during her zoological companion animal residency at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. After completing her residency and time in private practice, Dr. Joanna eagerly joined the team at BZC where she coordinates the design, build, and implementation of the ZARD. This multi-faceted position provides an opportunity to contribute to the global conservation and health of species through her expertise as a Boarded Specialist in Zoological Medicine™ while utilizing creative and administrative skills.

Ketaki Karnik, DVM, MS, Dipl ACVR

Role – Volunteer Radiologist

Bio – Dr. Ketaki enjoys working with wildlife and serves on the medical advisory board for the Los Angeles Zoo. She considers the creation of a database for non-domestic species invaluable and sees it as an opportunity to continuously improve patient care for free-living animals and those in managed care. A California native, Dr. Ketaki temporarily migrated to Ohio State University for her veterinary diagnostic imaging residency after completing veterinary school at University of California Davis. Besides volunteering her time for the ZARD, she loves traveling around the world, sometimes to remote places, to view and photograph native species and engage with local community members about the advanced veterinary care that can be provided.

Lauren von Stade, DVM, MS, Dipl ACVR

Role – Volunteer Radiologist

Bio – Dr. Lauren has a longstanding interest in zoological and aquatic species fueled by her desire to learn more about comparative anatomy and how this relates to function. Another California native, she moved across the country to Brown University in Providence, RI for her undergraduate studies prior to returning to California to attend UC Davis College of Veterinary Medicine. After completing her residency at Colorado State University, she joined the radiology service as a faculty member. Dr. Lauren thinks the development of ZARD will be a great resource for radiologists to access and help support care for zoo-managed animals, as well as further our knowledge base and allow for more collaborative research.

Erica Noddings-Zinola, BVM&S, MRCVS, Dipl ACVR

Role – Volunteer Radiologist

Bio – After being raised in San Diego, Dr. Erica attended veterinary school in Edinburgh, Scotland and completed time at a private practice in England before returning to the United States for specialty training in veterinary radiology. She has since returned to San Diego where she enjoys dedicating part of her time as a radiologist to assisting the ZARD team. Her goal is to read as many zoo and non-traditional companion species studies as possible! Dr. Erica’s fondest memory of being a veterinarian is helping an inquisitive young boy learn about and understand vaccines during a routine consult for his first dog. His youthful curiosity, genuine interest, and open fascination was very inspiring.

Shanna Marroquin, DVM, MS, DACVR

Role – Volunteer Radiologist

Bio – Originally from Kansas, Dr. Shanna attended Kansas State University for vet school before completing her diagnostic imaging residency at Mississippi State University. She works as a 100% remote radiologist with VET.CT through which she can contribute to the health and welfare of a large variety of wildlife and zoo species from all over the world. Dr. Shanna is excited to volunteer for the ZARD because this project allows her to combine my passion for diagnostic imaging and my excitement for working with a diverse range of species. She says, “It’s truly an honor to contribute to such an important cause while doing what brings me so much joy.”

Meg Thompson, DVM, DACVR

Role – Volunteer Radiologist

Bio – Dr. Meg is a board-certified veterinary radiologist that currently serves as the Associate Dean of Hospital Operations at the Cornell University Hospital for Animals. Although she primarily serves the veterinary community in an administrative role, Dr. Meg has a large heart for zoological medicine and radiology. Dr. Meg completed her radiology residency at the University of Florida and continues to interpret diagnostic imaging studies for zoological companion animals, wildlife, and zoo-managed animals at Cornell. One of her favorite memories as a veterinarian was when she learned snapping turtles can extend their necks and reach almost 180 degrees behind them – watch your fingers!

Marina Victoria Mavromatis, DVM, DACVR

Role – Volunteer Radiologist

Bio – Dr. Marina is another dedicated board-certified radiologist that is excited to contribute to the ZARD! After journeying up and down the east coast for vet school at North Carolina State University and a radiology residency at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, she and her husband settled down in Pennsylvania. Dr. Marina’s passion for zoological medicine goes far beyond radiology, however. Her favorite memory of being a veterinarian is attending a wildlife immobilization and care course in South Africa where she had the privilege of working with free-ranging lions, white rhinos, sable antelope, and cape buffalo. These days, Dr. Marina enjoys airborne adventures with her husband, a licensed pilot, and mastering the latest board game.
