College Internship Program

COLLEGE INTERNSHIPS

Opened in 1934, Brookfield Zoo Chicago is proudly accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), American Humane, and the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums. Our mission is to inspire conservation leadership by connecting people with wildlife and nature. In fulfilling this role, Brookfield Zoo Chicago has a long-standing internship program that has been recognized as one of the top programs for college students in the country. The program, established in 1975, was one of the first in the nation to allow students pursuing careers in animal care the opportunity to work side by side with animal care specialists, learning the skills and techniques necessary to care for a variety of species.

Since that time, the internship program has evolved to include work study and research opportunities in a variety of areas and fields, including conservation, education, animal care, environmental quality, veterinary technology, marketing, and more. Animal Care Specialist interns work alongside experienced mentors to learn about daily animal husbandry, behavioral enrichment, and welfare practices. Environmental Quality interns assist in assessing and maintaining habitats and ensuring the highest standards of animal care and welfare. Vet Tech interns gain practical experience in animal health, working alongside our skilled veterinary team in our state-of-the-art animal hospital. Marketing interns help promote the zoo's programs and events, engaging the public, and enhancing our outreach efforts. Additionally, all interns take on an independent project tailored to their strengths and interests, gaining invaluable skills and insights in a dynamic zoo environment. Join us to make a meaningful impact on wildlife conservation while exploring diverse career paths in the zoological field!
